Title A Connecticut Damon and Pythias. p. 2r
Date 1876
Subjects Ireland, Alexander, 1810-1894
Description P. 2r, Damon and Pythias text: Draft of a short prose excerpt by Walt Whitman, entitled "A Connecticut Damon and Pythias," on the verso of which is a draft of a letter, dated 1876 in Camden, New Jersey, from Whitman to the English author Alexander Ireland. The prose excerpt, based on an entry in the recently-published diary, "Pinckney's memoirs," describes the relationship between Jonas Pinckney and his friend Abel, who were known as "Damon and Pythias" for their deep and abiding affection. Abel succumbed at age 45 to a bronchial infection, and Jonas, heartbroken at the loss of his lifelong companion, died the following year. In his letter to Ireland, Whitman thanks him for his order for a copy of "Leaves of grass," and promises to send it as soon as the edition now in press is completed.
