User-Contributed Transcription 10forgotten on the march toward the more advanced life. The Indian boys and girls are not sent to Carlisle to be trained in the work of imitating their progenitors, but instead to forget [crossed out: all they can of] their past while preparing for life under modern condition. When they come out of school and have earned money in some useful occupation Then if they want Indian relics and curios (which in fact were never made by Indians at all) They can go into the market and buy them the same as they can imitations of the work of the Japanese and Chinamen. The purpose of the school is not to preserve the characteristics of Indian life but rather an admonition to the Carlisle pupils to "forget it".The way to check an eventually disastrous adventure is to hit it real hard at the first manifestation of its tendency [crossed out: in the wrong direction] Let us hope that the secretary of the Interior, if he will do no more, will at least decluster?
