On May 18, 1980 the volcanic peak of MOUNT ST. HELENS, dormant for 123 years, experienced a major eruption. The picture on the left reflects Spirit Lake at the base of the mountain BEFORE any volcanic activity. The second photograph was taken one month after the major eruption blew approximately 2000 feet off the top of the moun-tain. Pictured here is the crater that resulted from the eruption.
