User-Contributed Transcription report, but the intriguing thing is the way he prefaced it: "I didn't have time to get up to Michigan to re-live Hemingway's story (I had to work on the last chapter of my novel), but I did talk to the postmaster in the area for an hour or so. Now, when I was on the phone..." Some people are different from you + me — that's my conclusion.
One of the most intriguing of recent events (for me) is a letter I got from Carnegie Tech. The Dean there noted that Carnegie Tech + Mellon Institute were going to merge soon into Carnegie University (with a combined endowment of 200 million) + the University was going to be offering a doctorate in English in the near future. At any rate, the Dean wanted to know if that bait might induce me to consider the Chairmanship at Carnegie. I wrote back + said "maybe" + they've asked me to come down + visit the place on the 14th, 15th, + 16th of December. At the worst I'll get royal treatment + I'm looking forward to the sparring session with the President + assorted deities.
The family is well. Amy learned to drive recently, + I bought another car — second hand. Now Amy buzzes around Westport as if she owned it.
The children are all doing well in school. Shel got straight A's on his last report card, + the other children did equally well. Shel is not yet a master on the violin, but he is improving vastly, + the same is true of Matt + the cello.
Love,
Jim
