User-Contributed Transcription Dear Jack + Gladys: I was down [[?]] M[[?]] for Thanks-giving + Rowena is doing pretty well. [[?]] to [[?]] for the earlier period at Johns Hopkins had been pretty terrible. There was one period of five [[?]] when [[?]] waiting for the results of some laboratory tests - when [[?]] did not know whether Rowena would live or die, [[?]] all I could gather the odds were much better that she would die than live. It was bad enough for me to know such a thing, but Rowena also - despite the fact that she was pretty completely [[?]] from the [[?]]ration - managed to pry the information [[?]] the doctors (she knows [[?]] much about [[?]] for her own good), so that made for a pretty morbid atmosphere.
But now she is getting much better [[?]] the lab tests turned out well. When [[?]] I saw her [[?]] Thanksgiving, she was walking - or perhaps plodding [[?]] a better word - + she was cheerful + thinking of [[?]]ing to Terre Haute after Christmas. About the [[?]] big remain-ing part of the operation is the fact [[?]] she still has considerable visual difficulty. Her eyes tire easily + even when not tired, they play funny tricks on her - when she tries to read, she has difficulty with the first letters of words. The doctors say this will get better tho. Love, Jim
