User-Contributed Transcription New York — and I've always depended on liquor for guidance in such matters. Now I have to try to think rationally. On the one hand I have a good administrative job here with harmonious working relations with the faculty + the higher administration. On the other hand, the position at Lehman would give me greater academic authority to do some things I want to do (my only adminis-trative superior would be the President of Lehman), a much higher salary (the salaries in the city university system are absurdly disproportionate to academic salaries elsewhere), + possibly ulcers. Five years ago, or even a few months ago I wouldn't have hesitated at all, but in the last few months I've discovered that I'm not as strong either physically or emotionally as I once thought I was. For that reason the prospect of entering the maelstrom of the New York system — with its ethnic problems, its union demands, its student aggressiveness — makes me wary. But then, there is the challenge, and maybe even I could be of some use...
