Dear Jack and Gladys:
The news about Jimmy was of course, shocking — the more so because he was so young + Margaret Jean + the children needed him so. I imagine things are going to be pretty rough for all of you for a while. I wish I could help. Do you think maybe it might help Margaret Jean to spend a little time away from Chicago? If so, we'd love to have her spend a while in Terre Haute; it wouldn't be exciting, but I doubt if Margaret Jean wants any excitement.
Things up here are pretty much as they always are. Most exciting thing was that I was involved in a car accident and my car was a total loss. So now I've got a 1956 Plymouth — in-surance paid — + slowly am getting over a sprained back that hurt pretty badly for awhile.
Next news: Rowena is pregnant again — a miscalculation — and we're hoping for another human being.
Next: Columbia sent back my West manuscript. They had no comments except for regrets. Said the decision had been hard to make but they felt the study couldn't have much long-term appeal. I felt like writing back + saying that that depended on how well West's reputation stood up, + that was conjectural and they knew that to begin with. — At any rate I've made a few changes + additions + shall send the manuscript somewhere else, I guess.
A short while back I did a review for PS on Motley's new book. I said some pretty nasty things — all deserved — but I told Karl Shapiro I'd just as soon — even would prefer — that the review not be seen. I thought that would end the review — which I felt obligated to do since I'd accepted the assignment — but it didn't: the review is supposed to appear in the [[?]] Schooner.
That's about it. The teaching goes on as always, + I [[?]] [[?]]ing — less + less hopefully — that Haward will call someday. The [[?]]st [[?]] I got last year though were from Purdue + Michigan State, both of which jobs I turned down. Have nothing interesting in prospect now, but I'm going to New York — the Modern Language Association meetings — after Christmas + see if anything turns up there. Something of no worth [[?]]
One other thing: James T is giving [[?]] at Indiana
