User-Contributed Transcription Sheldon is also nagging in another way. He wants to begin college — though he hasn't finished yet his junior year in high school — and in furtherance of his campaign he's applied to Chicago (+ been interviewed) and taken the Scholastic Aptitude Tests. In the latter he scored in the 99+ percentile, + he keeps flaunting those scores in front of me to prove that he's ready for college. I keep telling him I don't want him to go to college yet, not so much because it's damned expensive but because I want him — with Vietnam the way it is — to fail a couple of grades in high school before he even starts college.
As for me, the most important news is that I've quit smoking — at least I've quit for over a month — + I look in the mirror each day + am awed by the face (noble + strong) that stares back at me.
I've also inveigled $1500 annually out of the administration — you'd be proud of me — to give annual awards (at an annual Banquet) to the Connecticut Writers of the best work of fiction, non-fiction, + poetry for the year. The Banquet is to be held in May, at which time the Van Wyck Brooks Awards will be announced. Why not come?
Beyond these facts, nothing much. For a while I was toying with the idea of leaving Bridgeport, for a couple of rather attractive offers were thrust at me — one as a Dean, the other as a Provost (or Vice-President-Academic) — But Bridgeport bribed me with money (beyond my wildest dreams of avarice) and with departmental concessions (which should please my senior staff) and so I'm rather content to remain here. Who wants to be a Provost. I really don't. As a matter of fact — save for the money — I don't want to be a Chairman. I'd rather teach.
Come + see us —
Love,
Jim
