Dear Jack:
Just as note to tell you how much I enjoyed seeing you + visiting Moberly on Jack Conroy day. I wish I'd known exactly what I was supposed to do on that panel prior to sitting down, so I could have done more than talk off the top of my head — maybe even have said something intelligent — but as your old friend Archie says, "toujour gai, toujor gai." I wish also that I'd been able to stay for "Banjo Dancing," but I just had to get back in Carbondale the next morning to discuss with the President here, a lad named Sumit, the need for our Russian program — a fairly costly program that he'd like to destroy. In any case I truly enjoyed seeing you, more than I can say, + I hope to see you again + again + again before our last shirts wear out.
All goes much the same as usual here in Carbondale. A couple of weeks ago I wandered to the local race track to squander my substance + what should strike my eye in the first race but a horse called Hy Jamie. A miracle I thought — but then to check the validity of the miracle I scanned the racing form and of course concluded that I couldn't believe in this miracle because the facts implied it
