Summary Lorenzo Dow Stephens (b. 1827) was born in New Jersey and raised in Illinois, where he joined a party for Califoria in 1849. Life sketches of a jayhawker (1916) begins with Stephens's overland journey west, including Brigham Young's sermons at the Tabernacle in Salt Lake. He describes prospecting on the Merced River, farming in the Santa Clara Valley, and cattle drives from San Bernardino and San Diego. His memoirs continue through the 1860s, including his part in the 1862 British Columbia gold rush.
