User-Contributed Transcription Cedar Grove Milo 1850J.M. to I.S.Aug. 10 we sent a letter to you by this morning' mail which is deem'd a sufficient apology for beginning another. I dont get many new plants now a days but under the shade of the appletree at the Corner of the piazza Mother suddenly found a strange one of novel appearance & structure, the flowers were so exceedingly minute that I could barely with decern with my magniscope that they were of Singular appearance, without obtaining any Clue whereby to outfind it. So I began at the Begining of the Book & patiently search'd thro it. I am now prepar'd to certify that it is a Pilea pumila, grows in "rich shady places" pr Gray. I was of course not surprised at finding it there when I learn'd the Common name, Rich weed. another name is Clear weed in token of the semitransparent succulent stalk. I occationally study a while upon the heterogeneous bundle of nameless specimens & fragments which had accumulated. you know you & I look'd them over and nam'd what we could, & I had afterward examined those that I could get any Clues to, so that remnant are hard cases. Today I have been poring over them with unusual success, have identified two species of Gentiana , Gerinita & g. Andrewsic, both in a bad state of preparation being badly bug-eaten, found a large & elegant specimen, well preserv'd, of Andromeda ligustrina, the same which I suppos'd the plant you recently sent me mark'd "Primos?" to be. the leaves of your
