User-Contributed Transcription different fields he would get his Oats almost dry enough to go into the barn & there'd come a soaking rain He has got his crops all in now his Horse is some better of the lameness but not so as to use her You know Mr. John Gilman of this Town you know too perhaps that his wife is sick & has been 3 or 5 years Rheumatism Stiffness in her joins etc. has suffer'd exceedingly it has all along hurt her dreadfully to be mov'd (she is said to be a devoted christian and exceedingly Patient) - a year or so ago she got so the she couldn't lay more than 1/2 hour or an hour without being mov'd but it hurt her so to be mov'd that she couldn't keep from screaming. She has been growing worse and worse till she thought she could not be mov'd at all ever since that Spring it has been thought that she could live more than a day or tow - And ever since about the middle July she has not been mov'd at all - lays in exactly the same position and has liv'd till now!! Mr. G. told Charles a few days ago that she appear'd to be "stronger at the vitals than she did a month ago,, Tis horrid and almost miraculous - worms are literally devouring her & her bed nothing under her tho' they do every thing they can without moving her - by washing in Spirits & everything they can do. She has her senses perfectly and is so certain that it would kill her to be mov'd they have let her be thinking probably every day that it would be the last it is a monstrous - Strange affair and has occation'd some excitement there might and must be something done 2 of her sisters seems as if she ought to be mov'd and bed changed even at the risk of life. It seems incredible dont it. I think I've made a long story of it. from your affectionate Mother A.M. Metcalf
