User-Contributed Transcription I have not been much acquainted in Northfield but have supposed it a bad place as to the character of it inhabitants expected? by the street. I have often heard "Old Mason preach he us'd to be called a smart preacher I doubt whether his preaching ever did me or any body else any good I recollected I us'd to think it more an abstruse dissertation than a Sermon us'd to hear many coarse and droll anecdotes about him. I shall not talk to you about being sick but I do fee somewhat dispair'd at the thought of you taking Chloroform and I entreat you not to do it again. Although you seem to think it help'd you yet I dont believe it right to be taken except in extreme cases to be sure I dont know any thing about it but I have a right to be afraid of it. You seem to have a good deal of confidence in "your friend Field,, I hope he will prove himself to be all you wish. I feel a leetle apprehensive and yet I feel some ashamed of that same apprehension - for they tell me that I am too suspicious and apt to impute to wrong motive that which appears fair. Sometimes - and it may be so - But I know that at 25 or 30 years I was a unsuspecting credulous and simple heart as any one could be. It is very possible I've got to far the other way now.Mother & Lucy April 28th 1848Milo NorthfieldApril 22 d 26th 1848
