User-Contributed Transcription [left-hand side and top] 15th We had a letter from Ann last night. written 5 Oct. said she should start the next monday. Enclosed is ten dollars which Charles wishes you to hand to Eliab which he may place to C's account also the 2 dollars for Albina's things. C intended to write a letter to Eliab & expected to send him 25,00, but did not sell his Steers, but thinks it will be much more to his advantage to keep then as he has got much poor fodder suitable for Cedar Grove. Oct. 8 1850 young little Joseph has commenced giving lessons in Arithmetic. He will very much need the Map of the U.S. when they begin Geography. am sorry he could not have contriv'd to get it here before now. If you have any convenient opportunity I wish you would send it Morever I [crossed out] wish you would let Jane dig up a lot of that Dock root in back of your house & send it up if there is a good chance I want it to put in some syrup for Joseph there is not much of it growing about here [crossed out]now we did'nt have a single letter yesterday. I thought besure we should get one from you & one from Ann. I expect you are to hurried with work as usual that you can hardly spare time to breathe. But, if you dont heed my warning you may have to repent that's all.12th Almeda & I called at Mr. Rickers the other day. Imagine to yourself a pen or box 14 ft square with a roof to besure but the side boarded so loosely that you could think your hands out anywhere thro' the interstrees between the boards a table 3 old chairs a chest & a little bit of a cupboard. I suppose they have not had bread or meet more than half the time this summer - with a nurser babe. She has had to (as her children went to school except the two youngest) & Edward to help run after the cattle pick greens and berries to supply their hunger till the beans etc. got grown & had to go as far for it all as from here to the river - bende to watch a herd of cattle and keep them off of their field
