User-Contributed Transcription prospect between "absolutism and republicanism". I suppose it will be admissible for me to say to you, that I thought it an exceeding interesting discourse. It made me feel as if we were indeed living "in a grand and awful time", "in an age on ages telling".We have finished "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and it makes slavery seem worse than ever. If there is anything in the wide world that I hate with perfect hatred, it is the very name of Slavery. I wish I could do something to help "tread it out". I hope Miss Stowe's book will travel though the length and breadth of the land, winning hearts and hands at every step.I have been reading too, about the persecutions among the Protestants of Madagascar. Isn't it horrible? I could not but think, if professed Christians here were called to endure such fiery trials, how many would prove firm and faithful to the end? I do not know, but it seems to me sometimes, that a very small proportion of Christ's professed followers have that happy trusting confidence in God, that ardent, whole-souled love to Him, which make the cheerful, self denying, and enduring Christian; few who like Peter, can speak to the Searcher of
