User-Contributed Transcription where there were enormous drifts. You speak of your solitary Sabbath Afternoons -really you must feel rather alone sometimes, I should think. But my heart is thankful that one dares to be singular among that Sabbath-visiting community. What a lamentable state of things when clergymen and church alike with non-professors make a gala day of the Sabbath. I am glad you have the privilege of being alone- for I used to think it would be an unspeakable one when boarding in houses where it was next to impossible to be by myself - house with only one room and a loft. It is unpleasant to be obliged to stay in the midst of a gay company, on the Sabbath, who spend their time in laughing and talking of every subject, save that which should be the theme. Last evening was the closing meeting of the "Reading Circle", and a very interesting time we had. I do not know but I wrote you that father, and our physician, (who had a very thorough knowledge of history,) have attended many of the meetings, and added much to their interest by discussing the various characters which were brought to view, in the course of the reading. They were both present last evening, and, as we were just closing the "Life of Alfred the Great," they helped us to trace comparisons, and differences
