User-Contributed Transcription Lizzie Doe Lameville Sept. 14th / 51My Lucy dear Your last kind favor came to me at this place about two weeks since. Various have been my wanderings & diverse my thoughts & plans in regard to spending the Winter in this Western world since I last wrote you. Six weeks ago, perhaps I left Providence. My eldest brother Thomas decided on teaching, rented his place, & we disbanded. By special invitation I came here, (to stay a little) homeward bound. Two weeks of much enjoyment passed. when the day as the shadows of evening were deepening. My brothers, three, drove up. One run hastily in, to say to me that brother Frank was not quite in his right mind etc. The next moment himself appeared, clasped me in his arms, with tears of joy exclaiming "I thought you were dead, I saw you in heaven & I wanted to get to you" During the 48 hours he remained with us we had medical attendance almost constantly, but he grew worse at length violent. He was taken to Chicago to the insane Asylum in so high an excitement that the Dr. there in charge said in one night he gave him morphine sufficient to kill five well men, with little effect. An extra man is employed with him, the charge is $10.00 per week. He has been there nearly three weeks they have succeeded in allaying the violence of emotion & in inducing sleep. The cause we do not know. The premonotory symptoms for a few weeks were extreme irritability, & sleepless nights. The physician writes me every week. He closed
