This language is a figurative representation of the Christian State - Every christian might before conversion have been likened to a firebrand, which while it destroys, is itself destroyed. Sin is the consuming fire. The firebrand, when placed in favorable circumstances may produce a vast conflagration and destroy a large amount of property. It may be placed in a situation in which is will only consume itself. So the sinner, one sinner may beside being himself destroyed effects the ever-lasting ruin of a third - - The christian is a firebrand plucked from the burning. The fire of sin was consuming him but the hand of God was stretched
