User-Contributed Transcription I have has to punish only one scholar yet, and I assure you I keep them in very good subjection. I think a mild, decided government, especially for small scholars decidedly preferable to a harsh hasty one. I am convinced that singing is a very great help to the government of a school, or at least to the order & good feeling, which in a measure prevents the necessity of government. The thought of my "teaching music" may excite a smile, but, nevertheless - I may use my one talent or even half of one, if I can do good yet.LaGrange Mrs. Anna M. Metcalf 5 Huge? Milo Maine [across address] Refused[right-hand side] Sunday is the most trying day to me. People go visiting without distinction of age, sex or condition. Quiet is out of the question. Mr. Pronty has a meeting every Sabbath. Few attend. No singing usually. I take it there are some good farmers here, but not very enlightened as a general thing. What think you of this? "The Owl is a monk that chants midnight mass in the great temple of Nature."[bottom of page, upside down] Mehitable, I am informed that Miss Laura Ann Foster would be "very pleased" to see you. Did Phebe go to school to you? Has been to me till this week, is sick now. I think it is Consumption. Catharine Pronty seems a pretty good girl, though I have not much acquaintance with her. M.A. Libby beats all the rest. O, dear! Patience is a monument! Write me a good long letter next mail, won't you?
