User-Contributed Transcription Milo Apr. 27th 1848Dear Brother JosieI have got to go to Mrs. Lee's visiting this P.M. with Mother, but Charles insists that I must write to you to send by tomorrow's mail, before I go, as he is in haste to sow some Oats & Peas, and can't stop. The story is he has been waiting to get his money of Hector to pay his taxes - Last week Mr. Drake (Collector & Constable) threatened to do so, and yesterday morning actually came, with horse and waggon to carry him to Bangor! At first Charles declared he would go, and was stuffy as Drake, since he would not wait till next week, when Charles and Hector both guarantied him the money at that time. But on going to the Village, concluded finally, considering the state of his business here at home, to hire the money, 20.00, but has to pay a dollar a week for it. Severance is going to Bangor next week with shingles for Charles - but if C. could have the money this week instead of next, it would save him a dollar, so he wishes you to send the money - 20, by Sat. mail, if you will, and take the proceeds of shingles next week instead. It was a real time, I assure you, We felt - yes we did - and Albina looked pale as - so she did.You see the necessities of the case - Dollars don't grow on every bush, and 'tis vexatious to put them in Niles Carver's pocket - Charles will speak to Severance to bring up the things I wrote for by Samuel - A dozen tumblers and a pitcher
