User-Contributed Transcription if you expect your abiding place to be in Bangor for some years, it would be proper & best, but still I don't like to think of it, that so many are leaving us, while the few that remain are seemingly so cold & lifeless and disheartened. It seems to me our prospects grow darker & darker. There are changes, but all for the words. All who leave Milo seem to be of the better sort & those who move in, of the opposite, or at least of a doubtful character. We very much need a few substantial, decided men. You must make haste and grow and be such an mane and come back here to live & renovate and regenerate this town! I maketh me feel sad when I think of my brothers. They are all gone away. They don't live here. To be sure, this is their home and they'll come home to see us now in a while, but they don't live here any more. We never shall be a family together as we once were. The approaching Thanksgiving remind me of it. Three years ago all were all together. One had been taken. We know not how soon others may be; and should we all live many years, we may never all meet again on earth. How "from love's shining circle The gems drop away." However it matters not so much, if we are prepared to meet in that "land from parting free"there to enjoy together a "long eternity of love." There is but a short time, comparatively to spend here, & but little enjoyment to be taken, ever could we have all there is. I want to write to Eliab, & shall by Charles if possible but you know it is a busy time Thanksgiving week. Why don't he write? It has been a long time since I have seen a letter from him.
