User-Contributed Transcription Hampden July 28th 1848.Dear Mother & Brother I orter have written to you before but - have'nt! Are you satisfied with the reason? I have had something to do every day, and so have put it off from day to day. Last Wednes. Allura Dorr - who lives in the house with an ornamental "double & twisted sigma", as you said Isaac, on the gable ends - came to see me in the morning bringing with her a lady who boards with her. In the two o'clock stage came Lissie Doe with a visitor from Portland - Mary Shirley - and a little boy who is also visiting there. They were hardly seated before Mrs. Thaxter, Ann and Abby came. So you see my little sitting room was quite well filled. The two first visitors departed immediately on the arrival of the last however. We had a nice time. Mrs. Thaxter brought Abby to stay a week if I will keep her, which I am glad to do. Samuel likes to have her stay too - she is still & clever. Ann and Lissie have been teasing me to go to Boston with the, and I have thought some of it. I know I should enjoy it much. It would perhaps never be so pleasant again as when you are all there, but I have about given it up. There are various reasons why perhaps it is not best. I would love dearly to go on Mount Grace with you, Mother, as you say. Perhaps I shall sometime, if not now. Your last letter is up at Bangor, Isaac, so how can I answer it? I spake to
