User-Contributed Transcription little damsel could be and live I suppose. She is a real good girl, besides being bright as a dollar. I am learning her to write - think I shall not send her to school this winter. I have got her bound, dress, cloak, aprons etc. She is a good help to me just as willing & free to work as busy as I do all day long if I don't attempt to drive, only coax & praise her a little. An excellent girl to obey though. Mother has taught her "unanswering obedience" you know. I expect Mother before long. I intend to lay you and Eliab under contribution for a cloak without saying anything to her first. The question is how to furnish her room. Eliab & I have been talking about it - whether her home-made rag carpet ( which she has fixing) her old looking glass, a homemade lounge & some common chairs, or to buy a pretty common carpet, sofa, cane seat chairs etc. We got two good substantial, pretty carpets this fall for $15 and $13, a real pretty French sofa (round ends) for $32. cane seat chairs 1.50 apiece, good one, mirror for $3. A good sofa could be got for 25 or 28 dolls. only not so handsome. Her table would answer very well with a pretty cover, though out of date no matter- she has also a good rocking chair you know. I don't know whether E. had written you about it or not, but thought I would write a bit. Eliab was down here to Thanksgiving. Wish you and Josie were here too. Rec'd a long good letter from Mary Tower recently, at Woburn Mass. attending school. Roxanna Treat (sister to Joseph) who visited at Mrs. Crosby's last week, said she is engaged to one Mr. Hunting, a Missionary & is preparing herself to go out with him. I suppose it is reliable authority, is it not? Thank you brother for being so frank about the "pretty little girl" you speak of. If she is like Mary Tower, I know I should like her. I think I would dare
