User-Contributed Transcription the strange visitation vanished through the wall of the house! This Mrs. Johnson is one of the principal mediums. Two of our nearest neighbors are mediums. Prof. Pond's lectures was "on the sins & danger of consulting familiar spirits." Our cellar is almost digged. Our special object of this letter is to introduce to your notice the eldest son (nearly twenty I think, perhaps twenty one) of Mr. Samuel Crosby of Hampden with who we boarded. The substance of the matter is, he wants to be an Engineer, but don't know how to begin. One Mr. Deane of Winthrop teaches Engineering, but asks eight dollars a year tuition and $2 per week board, which makes it rather expensive. William has a natural turn for Mathematics & has paid considerable attention to it. Understands the theory of Surveying well to. He is tall awkward, bashful, green- taught school successfully last winter. Is determined to settle in the western states somewhere. His father wishes to know if you would be willing to take him with you, and teach and help him along as you can. He will pay you what is right for your trouble- he will go right on any time you would wish. If you cannot do then, he would like your advice about the next best course to take to make an engineer of him - whether to send him to that man or not. He would not get much but the theory there probably. Please write as soon as you receive this as the young man is waiting to know what to do with
