User-Contributed Transcription many places so long, besides "shutting down" and discharging men. We moved about three weeks since. I have worked pretty hard, necessarily, took cold I suppose, & suffered for a few days from lame shoulder & side (rheumatism) but 'tis better now. Our home is very convenient in every part & comfortable, we have it furnished to our mind, and feel more settled than before since we were married. Pretty carpet, real pretty french sofa, $32. centre table etc. in sitting room, carpet, bureau, sink etc. in best chamber, chamber for John, another for Jane, large, convenient bed, room below for ourself - stair carpet, & oil cloth to. on front entry. dining room with cook stove in it this winter, nice convenient kitchen beyond - a great abundance of clothes presses, closets & drawers all over the house. Wish you could pop in now & then, like last summer, to have good times with us, as then. Mrs. Finnegan helped me pick & dress 30 chickens last week - the fattest creatures I ever saw - packed them in snow - Samuel got some nice Buckwheat flour, with syrup prepared on purpose, for fritters - very nice. Jane is happy as a lark & a capital good girl - She got her dress, cloak, bonnet, aprons etc. I tell Sam'l that they'll spoil her - she is bright. She wants dreffully to see a rat. Said today she did wish she could find a whole nest of young ones, wish the old one on - she would wring their necks & set the cat on." Guess I wanted to laugh. She is certainly a very capable child - owing to Mother's faithful training. Her right shoulder blade protrudes. I don't know the meaning of it. I expect Mother will come soon, & I so want to have her. Eliab was here Thanksgiving day - and came down last Sat. night
