User-Contributed Transcription Hampden Dec. 12th 1849Brother Joph, I think I owe you a letter which has been over due for some time.I have no excuse plead guilty and throw myself upon the mercy of the Court. I feel somewhat disappointed by the report in relation your health in Eliab's last letter. I cannot believe yet but that you may receive help from some source. Flour, I bought Nov. 7th 180 bbls $5.50. 2 cts truckage, 1 ct hoisting, 1 ct per month storage 1.2 per cent insurance for 9 months $1.00 for policy, $5, 56 1/3 , and storage, I think it will sell for $6,00 without commission. Brandywine has paid $54,34. will probably pay $12.00 from her present freight say $66.00 cost $317. 50, balance $251,50 without any interest a/c. I presume she is worth that sum. shall let Capt. Dealing have her wintered where he thinks best probably at Frakfurt. I hear nothing from Fletcher. Barton of Bradford is cold, all mortgaged up to Brown. Porter, exchanged his note for Cushing & Hayford's payable first of Jan. Lot of old shingles rec'd of Eliab $11,30 Sent T.H. Swazey $7.38. balance and int. Have not seen any of our other Drs. shall visit them soon. Our Mill shut down the 3 ' I have not engaged any scaling shall not probably do much this winter. Eliab bot for me yesterday 1/16 of the H. Crosby about $210. Walter Brown & his son Frank will yet make money out of their shook trade with Hathorne the Son has gone to Cuba for his health and to please his friends.
