User-Contributed Transcription Milo Nov. 30th 1846Mr. White Sir I rec'd your letter last evening. Bangor Jan'y 8th 1847Dear Brother Isaac You will excuse me for using a sheet on which another letter was commenced (a negative answer to an application from La Grange to teach school this winter) as it must be used sometime & as well now perhaps as any time. Your letter of the 26th alt. was rec'd in due season, for which please accept my hearts thanks. It certainly does one good to recieve letters from ones friends. As Proverbial Philosophy says, "and should it thou ask my judgement of that which hath most profit in the world, For answer take thou this - the prudent penning of a letter." What a book that is - it has something on every subject, for every occasion. So many wise sayings, beautifully though oddly expressed, and always so true to nature. I am almost afraid I shall quote it as Scripture sometime, as friend Walker's class do Shakespeare. One of them quoted a passage from that Author as Scripture. Mr. W. told him it applied very well, but was taken from Shakespeare, not Bible. The fellow turned the joke by saying that Shakespeare was quoted so often by their teacher that he supposed it might pass current!
