User-Contributed Transcription His opinion coincides precisely with Dr Mc Ruen's. They think the nerves leading from the spine to the lower limbs are affected and Dr Rich thinks it not cured, it may lead to paralysis he thinks this may be a constitutional tendency in the Metcalfs to paralytic afflictions, but in that I presume he is mistaken. He recollects every particular of Josephs case - seemed to feel very much for him and to remember him with respect as a man. He said his case and that of his son, were providences which it seemed very hard to understand. His son, you know, imbibed animal poison nearly two years time and has been a great sufferer ever since. Probably will not live long. I have no doubt their opinions are correct as to the nature of my complaint, but I cannot feel that there is danger of such a result. I am now bathing in Oil of Cajuput and taking Gum Guachum (don't know as I spelt it right) I keep thinking every day and every week that I shall be better, but if I get better it don't seem to last long. We have employed Dr Rick since Samuel was sick, as he was attending upon one it would not do very well to send for another. We do not like him any better than Dr Mc Ruen, though he seems to be a really good old man - very kind in his feelings and always ready to tell a good story! We had a letter from Eliab about a week since, he was going the next day to Cleveland. I hope he will get through with his journeying and wanderings soon and come home. A letter from Anna also on her return from Louisville, where she has been spending part of her
