User-Contributed Transcription Hampden Sept. 20th 1850I.S. Metcalf Yours of the 15th inst. was rec'd yesterday enclosing a draft on the Traders Bank of Boston for $100, for which I send you a note Business has seemed to come round in such a way that the Senator comes into my hands as it were almost without any action of my own. If there is any risk in the Senator it is in owing too much of her rather, than in her cost, she is beyond a doubt a good piece of property but I ought to have what I own in her in three or four vessels so that in the event of a loss I should not loose all. I am very glad that you have been so fortunate in obtaining a good party, how much of our happiness depends upon the character of our associates, Alfred I think well of. his character is in one sense just forming, it seemed now to be in healthy state and if subject to right influences he will make a worthy man. I feel much interest in him. Eliab had been asked if he would accept the Office Grand Scribe of this Division of the S.T. I advised him to consent to be nominated pay $200 per year. We rec'd a letter from Ann a few days since she starts for home about the first of Oct.
