User-Contributed Transcription Brunswick Feb. 19. 1842Much esteemed Friends It is not for want of the highest regard towards you that I have so long neglected to acknowledge the receipt of your kind letter bearing date Nov. 12th the perusal of which gave me the mingled feelings of pleasure & pain. I was rejoiced to learn that you were in any degree recovering from your low estate, but was sorry it was in so gradual a manner. I hope ere this you have fully regained your health and can now lift up the voice of thanks - giving to the Giver of all our mercies for the full enjoyment of one of Earth's greatest comforts. Health is a blessing we but little prize as we ought until we are for a time deprived of its enjoyments. And even when we have learned something of its worth by painful experience how soon do we forget duly to regard those laws, so well known to us all designed for its preservation? Perhaps next to the interests of the soul are the means of health neglected by mankind generally. I do not say this reflecting that your sickness was in any way attributed to a want of suitable care & caution by you. Yet I do feel especially desirous that in case you may have partially or altogether recovered you should use every precaution to retain your health - almost the only thing that renders life itself desirable though I doubt not you will. During the two week before this I was engaged in teaching in Topsham a town adjoining this. The school was small but pleasant. Being so near the college I was favoured with an access to the Libraries & employed the most of my leisure hours in reading.
