User-Contributed Transcription at Macombers') John Philbrooks & other evil-minded person, - from what motive we cannot guess - had circulated all manner of false & ridiculous reports about the school, which had come to the Committee's ears. These reports were all bought up and investigated & proved false before all the scholars. One was that the scholars played cards in School; another, that Alfred Holman jumped over a seat where Albert Cook was writing; that Cook said "Lets have order" - Holman jumped over again, & Cook again called for order, and the Master took no notice of the affairs etc. etc. It was current report that the school was very noisy & the scholars very disorderly; whereas I never saw a school of brighter, prettier, better disposed scholars, large & small, in my life. Macomber had threatened & Chadbourn had been "Snake in the grass," - and the general opinion among the scholars was, that J. was to be turned out of the school. Well, the said S.S.C. came in, thinking to overawe, overwhelm, brow-beat & confuse our little diminutive Jo Metcalf at once; but lo! what did he, but forthwith assume the "form of statue" of a man, & be as brazen-faced as they, Chadbourn had hardly got seated, before J. in hearing of all the school, with all the "our Jo.ism" imaginable" took him to due "for telling Tolman there was trouble in school, and asked him the author of the reports. The poor man was dumbfounded, as the saying is; - he turned pale & red & pale again; and finally said the reports were very trifling, he though it not worth while to give credence to them, he could not remember who told him��!!! J. hinted that they were worth telling to Tolman! and said when reports so injurious to the characters of such young men as he had
