User-Contributed Transcription were gone till school was most half done. There were five of them. I used no words, but faced? them all, individually & collectively severely, and made them all sit down in the desk. Then I told the girls that when they came in from recess, they might all point their fingers & shame them, which, of course, they were very ready to do. Last of all, I deprived them of their recess for a week! I have not been, and do not expect to be, any more troubled with truants! There is no telling how much better it is to take such unruly boys & train them thoroughly to begin with. They know now, and feel that "wall of partition" is established, and they dare not overstep the bounds. Mrs. Mower, who, you know, if you are acquainted with her, is a very decided character- strait as H with her children, and an old School ma'am -says the children for sometime have been in the habit of doing as they pleased here; and I judge she is correct from the appearance of the school when I came here. I can't have "young ones" round me unless they will mind; & if they are ugly, I'll make 'em behave. They shall. Folks say they admire my spunk in turning Graffam out of school. He has always been a trial in school but the mistresses dared not punish him for fear of offending his folks. The Berry boys also, are great trials to me. Did they go to school to you? I suppose however I shall be troubled no more with any of the crew; Fernalds, Berry's, Graffam's, & what not. They have none of them been since the turn-out-ation of Charles. The worth is their own. If they knew it did'nt trouble me to have them stay away, I expect they would come. As for Kitty Buckman, she is, as you say, a veritable trial. but such a queer imp withall, that I can't help laughing at her sometimes. Jim is a bright boy. Lydia Giles goes to school -studies Philosophy, Geography, & Arithmetic. Emma does not go and I am not sorry. I dislike her. Sylvia Dudley
