User-Contributed Transcription Lucy Sept. 13 55Dear Mother James & Lizzie did not go this morning as I supposed they would when I wrote a few hasty words last night. Now it is half past 9- Sam'l has just come & brought no letter from you all, wherat we are some disappointed, wanting much to hear from you. The sad operation is all over & Mr. Rider is nicely comfortable. Feels better than either time before. Sam'l and Eliab both went to the Dr.'s with him. Eliab saw the whole operation, so did James - Sam'l went into another room - he is easily overcome at such a time. The doctor was two minutes with his knives , & ten before it was all done up. Gertie seems - well, & was going to say a little better, but can only say she is certainly no worse, and the Dr. says that is enough to encourage us a good deal she was so very low yesterday. He is giving cod liver oil -the only thing he knew of that could help her, as she is so low he does not give her any active medicine. They rub her also in the oil, as he says she may be much strengthened in that way. We just about gave her up yesterday. I never saw so pitiful looking a child. I wrote to Anna today, letting the news. We feel so relieved now Mr. R. is through - stays in his chamber - Maria is not going to see him at all - she is so worn down, we think it might trouble her too much. He does not look near as badly as before - good nightgreat loves to Nettie & all Lucy.
