User-Contributed Transcription she did with apparent pleasure. Thus far when Maria came to spend the afternoon. She has been up most every day. One day Samuel carried her to Oldtown with him. She enjoyed it much. Has had four letters from Eliab already, though he had not at his last date arrived at his place of destination. Yesterday Miss Mary Adams called. Hearing through Mr. Bennett's folks that Mrs. Lee was here, she came to invite her to their house. She sat an hour in familiar converse. I scarcely even felt so self possessed & free to act myself before in my life. Really I believe I equalled her in fluency & ease in conversation. I spoke of Lucy. She recollected her at once as my niece who attended Miss Call's school. She also remembered Joseph. Spoke particularly of his examination for admittance to the church. He differed from others on some topics, family worship etc. and expressed his opinions in a very original manner - said she formed the impression that he lived within himself very much. Mrs. Bartlett & S. Parker called today. I forgot to tell Ann that Mr.[left-hand side] Baby has made considerable effort to look at his hands.
