User-Contributed Transcription Deer Isle Sept. 4, 1851 Deer Isle, Sept. 4 - 1851.Dear Mother & Brother It is most tea time. I have been waiting for Samuel to bring home some milk, as the good lady Webb had none in the house. We got along nicely - had to wait more than two hours for the Lawrence at Searsport, which did make us feel almost impatient. arrived at Deer Isle about 1/2 past one when we found carriages in waiting to take passengers to the town on N.W. Harbor, as it is called. There are a great many places in the incorporated town of Deer Isle, besides this, as for instance, S.W. Harbor, S.E. Harbor, Burnt Cove, The Landing, the Beach, Little Deer Isle, Isle of Haut etc. etc. This, however, is the principal place in the kindom. The whole town contains about 4000 inhabitants. We conclude on the whole it is a tolerable decent kind of a place - better than we expected. We have really a nice boarding place. The most neat and quiet little place that you can imagine, overlooking this "N.W. Harbor." The whole family consists of one very small and very smart woman called "Widow Webb", one boy rejoicing in the two endearing titles of Bub & Charley, (about eleven years old), one black cat with four white feet and a white nose, and one solitary Canary bird. Withal a very quiet, sober, cosy little family. We occupy the Parlor and adjoining bedroom. We judge from furniture
