User-Contributed Transcription Bangor June 6, 1851 Bangor June 6 - 1851.Dear Mother I'll begin a letter today to send by James when he goes home. I have just finished one to Isaac, and dispatched James to the P.O. with it. I received one from him yesterday dated at N.Y. City and mailed at Albany. He finds no prospect of employment on the Hartford & Fishkill R.R. and is going on farther - thought it probable he might be in Westfield this week and wished us to write to him there. You have probably had letters from him before now. He has purchased grave stones in Boston. I rode down to Hampden yesterday to visit at Mr. Crosby's. The same good people as ever - get some tried, but feel quite rested now. James seems to enjoy life finely here. We had a great fire Wednes. which of course was quite an exciting time for him. The largest fire there has been for some years = six dwelling houses Eastes' & Whittese's store foundry besides several shops, and with great difficulty saved the Universalist Meeting house. The lower side is black from top to bottom. Cleared all out on the lower part of Baptist hill and Exchange street. Very high wind so that roofs of houses caught fire many times way up State St. most half a mile. broke out again in the night and burnt a brick stable belonging to, and joining the Hammet house,
