User-Contributed Transcription Lucy Oct. 16 55 Bangor Oct. 16, 1855Dear Mother We arrived at home about 5 o'clock after a tedious ride - we stopped an hour or more at Corrinth. The travelling was bad, the horse lazy (or sick), the air extremely chilly & uncomfortable, Percy heavy (I carried him most of the way because I could keep him warmer) and Sammie very sad & unsocial. The wind blew so that I could not keep warm. I took some cold. Percie has a very bad cold yet - coughs nearly half the night - the weather you know, has been unfavorable ever since we returned. You will think I am a great complainer, but I hope to feel better by and by. You know I had not a mouthful of food cooked in the house when we got home - our[left-hand side and top] up on the bookcase where I laid them- One will to no good in either place - If you find it please send it with the dress. Maria got a black thibet shawl with silk fringe for seven dollars- Should you like one? It seems as if a "bay state" will be too heavy to take the place you need between cloak and mantilla. A thibet long shawl would be very nice only so expensive. In haste - with love to all - daughter Lucy.
