User-Contributed Transcription bow of velvet behind, trimmed with a narrow edge. The pink ribbon that I have put inside with black velvet, for $3.50 - Very reasonable, we think - Mrs. Crosby & Rufus were here Sat. P.M. (by the way I forgot to say that 'tis Mond. eve now - I would'nt have you think I wrote all this letter Sunday.) Rufus just from Kansas - very much out of health - has suffered much from fever & ague bloated & pale, with some cough - He reminds me very much of Margaret - Mrs. C. very much disappointed at not seeing the twins - did not know they were here till they had gone - Mr. C. had not been to Bangor for a good while - Poor man! he is coming down with the hypo again. Another year of wretchedness for him & his family. The last time he had it, he started off to Boston one day. (Rufus gone away & Mrs. C. could not prevent him) was found next day lying on a wharf in Boston drunk - perfectly insensible - by a Hampden man - he took him on board the boat, fixed him up & saw him home - When Mr. C. came to himself he was so mortified that the man could hardly restrain him from jumping overboard - Mr. C. told him if he would never mention it, he would give him his horse - Caroline told me - it was just before Margaret died, when he was so bad with hypo & have crazy with grief. She thinks the man has never mentioned it. Can we imagine what Mrs. C. has to suffer? Miss Pease fitted two dresses for Caroline one day & fixed the sleeves to my cloak so that I could finish them - I did not have it otherwise attend. The girls have had letters from Binghamton saying that Sammie appears better. I imagine you will call me a strangely changeable animal -
