User-Contributed Transcription St Paul May 15th 1857Dear MotherYour letter of April 27 I see today on my return from Cottage Grove. I arrived here the first day of the month at 6:30 A.M. I left Elyria on Wednesday April 25th one day to Chicago. Stopped their one day. Spent a night with Mr & Mrs Cha's Thaxter who were quite glad to see me, and I was glad to see Lizzie. I think that she is not very happy, and no one to blame but herself. She believes it is quite an act to learn to be content. Chicago I dislike very much. Flat and wet, I stopped a few days with Fred Wingate in DuPage County 20 miles West from Chicago, a very fine country. The prairie is much more rolling than I had thought, unimproved land is worth then $25 to 30 per acre wood enough if evenly distributed good water by digging 20 feet. Some of the country between them and Dunleith is flat and undesirable. I arrived at Dunleith Monday eve April 27
