User-Contributed Transcription As to the question which I put to you at your house I have thought I ought to apologize for and ask your pardon for inquiring into what perhaps it is none of my business to know. I doubt not your confidence in me, at all and think as you do, that it would not be right for you to make known the contents of his letter to any but those concerned; but my question was, whether you had come to an engagement? but that is none of my business, and if you do not see fit you need not tell me. I know of Newton's partiality towards you but believe I had no suspicion that he had written you and thought it was not his intention to make an immediate proposal. I have tried to place myself in your situation as you requested and I think I should have, as you had, many scruples whether it would be right for me to show such a letter to any one - but if to any body it would be one whose trust I had tried and was sure such an one would not betray me, and even then, I should be governed by considerations and circumstances. I am glad of it hoping that you will "hitch up" a step nearer to us. 'Twill seem a sight better to go to see you and [continued left -hand side] your sincere friend Naomi[left-hand side and top] Mrs. Searles all together. Lucy what is your opinion about calling on Mrs. EA Dow? For my part I cannot find in my heart to give her up , it seems to me that by keeping an acquaintance with her we visiting her we may exert a good influence on her a good way.
