User-Contributed Transcription St. Paul Feb'y 3rd 1858Dear MotherI have been watching for a letter from you for a number of weeks. The last I rec from you was written Dec 25th which I answered at once. I do not know that I have anything of much interest to write about, I have been very quiet here This winter, I have hired a room until the first of April where I store grain for the Cottage Grove folks, but sell very little, there is no money here, I sometimes go to the Grove to see the folks there. we were all together New Years Eve, I shall start in a few days to examine a road to be built by the U.S. next May, June & July in direction of Lake Superior and extending too within seven miles of the Lake. a job of some $10,000, they have now advertised for proposals to be rec untill the 27 inst, but I deem it very uncertain about gathering the work, as there will. e much competition. Government's also going to build a road commencing at Fort Ripley and extending some forty miles in the direction of Pembina which will be let soon, there will not probably be much done in the City in grading of streets this coming season. There is more money to be made doing work for the City than for Uncle Sam if one can wait for pay, I am talking
