User-Contributed Transcription large basket containing bedding etc. was suspended by the wall; a gun for "mutual defence" rested near the ceiling on two hooked sticks, and various bunches of yarn, the result of the good woman's industry, hung about the room. A broken candle stick hung on a strap of leather, prepared for the purpose, over the fireplace. A wide shingle put in a chink between two boards formed the mantel piece, upon which were a couple of well used pipes, some tobacco and a dirty newspaper. When the season arrived for returning to rest, the good man crawled up the ladder to bed, resigning his more comfortable situation below, to me. His loving spouse did then dress the bed anew in a cleanly manner, out of pure regard to my feelings probably, a deposit a pretty clean little baby therein. She then drew forth the trundle bed, and snugly bestowed three more into that, after which she extinguished the fore, and proceeded to unrobe and betake herself to rest, desiring me to do the same. She is a very kind, good-hearted woman, and showed me every attention in her power; was very fearful lest I should not rest well, and for that reason, I suppose, I could not close my eyes in sleep till past the "noon of night." I thought I had been "brought into straits" before, but this outdid them all. Alas! for the miseries of a country school ma'am! Say you not so? I rose in the morning, partook of a very good breakfast, went to meeting, and got back to my boarding place at night alive! Some people have trials, difficulties & inconveniences which even we know little about. I had had an excellent boarding place, as good as I could wish with the exception of seven noisy children! which, with you, I suppose, would be no small objection. I do wish I could get more good books to read. Really need some.
