User-Contributed Transcription Excellent. "Safer is he that storeth knowledge than he that would makest for himself." I mourn over our deficiency of intellectual food, but cannot help it. What excessively warm weather & what a quantity of it, we have this summer. Wish C. had planted more corn! I wish you could get the school in Brunswick that you spoke of. Too bad you have to be out of College so much. Ezra Barker is going to teach a high school at the village this fall & has engaged the village school for this winter. It seems friend Tash's plan did not succeed. Write soon - Aff. Sister Lucy.Sept. 10th 1846 Forwarded Way 6 5 /11 Miss L.H. MetcalfVia Turner LagrangeTopsham Milo Aug 29th. Sept. 5th.Bradford MeSept 5/46Forward to Sept.9 Mr. Isaac S. Metcalf Topsham Maine[right-hand side] Mehitable Furber, Naomi Hill, Eliza Wilder and I don't know who else, are soon to start for Lowell Factory. I do very much wonder at Mehitable, as good a home as she has. Her father nor mother, neither of them want her to go. She knows not what is for her good, in my opinion. Don't think she will stay long. Intends to stay a year, then come home & go to Wisconsin.[bottom of page upside down]Milo Sept. 11th Got home day before yesterday. Charles was most sick, feverish, & in pain all over, but is much better, quite smart now. The children have all got the Whooping cough, Jenny & all. Lucy & Lisy are the worst, as yet - not very bad. What a beautiful rain we are having today! Very much needed. Everything drying up. Quite sickly in divers places owing to so much hot dry weather, & no thunder to purify the air. C. has got all his Oats harvested, safely in the barn. Intended to have got in said hay before the rain, but was sick. He has an excellent little boy. First rate fellow. Always pleasant & ready & willing. Works hard too. Never goes to meeting! Can't make him. Suppose you rec'd letters from Bangor by Mrs. Brown at Commencement.
