User-Contributed Transcription Lucy Oct. 55Dear Mother Nettie has just been writing, and has left her envelope open for me, so I'll try & write a little, though I have nothing special to say. The dear ones Eliab & Maria, are in great sadness - they seem to have given up hope for Gertie, and truly there does not seem to be much chance for hope. I suppose Nettie has told you of her fears. It seems strange that she should hold out so long, remaining just about so, if she is not going to be better. She is a little delicate thing, and so small, I suppose there cannot be so much change for her as for a child of larger physical development. It seems as if Eliab & Mallie & Hattie too, must get entirely worn out - she has to be carried a great deal - seems to have some difficulty of breathing at times, [left-hand side] Nothing it would have been to have spared Percie last summer, to what it would be now.
