User-Contributed Transcription Lucy. Bangor Dec 17. 1853Du Quoin. Jan 3. 1854feel bound to reprimand him, as I did your honor for days of yore! We have had most delightful weather for a long time - like Sept. and Oct - no snow yet, but plenty of mud. Long time ago there was a cold time, the river froze up suddenly & unexpectedly, closing in three steamboats & sixty vessels. Ship owners, merchants &c. quarrelled energetically for a day or two about getting them cut out, when the weather moderated & the ice left for "parts unknown" of its own accord. Though, I believe there was a good deal of cutting done. Mallie says she knows she ought to write, but 'tis so hard to write to those she has never seen. She has had a splendid present - a pin,(mosaic) sent from Rome. Charles will tell you about it. I never knew a person have so many presents before; rich ones, too. I have not been to Mr. Crosby's since the day Margaret was buried - have been waiting for sleighing - Tell William we deeply sympathize with him in the loss of his excellent sister. My love to him. Do please write often -Written up the left side:Eliab has recently bought The life of Isaac T. Hopper - We do not like it near so well as he expected-Written on the right side:Does Anna write frequently to you? She seems very happy in her new home -
