Smith, Mr. Burlingane, Dr. Anderson, Prof. Shepard &c &c We have good times here together this winter - Eliab is reading loud evenings McFarland's history of Japan, and Nelson's Cause & Cure of Infidelity - both very interesting books. We had no snow until January, then the greatest quantity of snow fell in six days ever known to fall here in that length of time. It blew into drifts so much that there was not very good sleighing - considerable bare ground - since then, a great rain storm & thaw which carried the snow almost entirely away - now another warm snow storm. Samuel bought old Nellie of Mr. Gould, but she had the spavin, so he sold her to Mr. Buroughs for 60 dollars less than he gave, and bought Mr. Kittredges' horse for $150. It is quite a pretty creature & will be gentle with a little training. Were you not really
