Jan. 4. Fair Weather. Cold. Ben. F. Butler was inaugurated Gov. of Mass. made a very long address. College opened. girls nearly all back.
Went to sewing society at Mrs. Shattuck's and had a very good time. rode home with some South Natick people, reaching here about ten oclock. The lady who brought me home is Mr. Edwards' daughter. Received a letter from Pater this morning. Prof. Niles gave his first Lecture at the College this evening.
Jan. 5. Snow. Taught three classes today and began my Qualitative Analysis work. Attended Prof. Niles' Geology lecture in the evening. Miss Chandler and I did not read Oliver Twist together at 2:05 as we had planned to letters. Read 'Scientific Philanthropy' and 'Gospel of Recreation' in Popular Science Monthly. We took the Etiquette Book to the lunch table and endeavored to follow its directions.
Jan. 6. Snow all day. After 9:50 class, went to Boston to Annual Meeting of Intercollegiate Alumnae Association, at the Vendome - a pleasant meeting and a good lunch. Left there soon after 2:00, a went to see Edith at 170 W. Brookshire St. found her well and enjoyed a visit with her. Came out on the 6:30 train. Dean Huntington, of Boston University, who preaches at the College tomorrow, rode up in the coach with me. May Ellis arrived this afternoon.
Jan. 7. Sunday - Snow has stopped. Clear towards night. and warmer. Mr. Cowan's text was I Tim. 2.5. "One mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus." My five boys were all at Sunday School. The third Sunday that Will Tailby has been present. "L[[ouie?]] H[[u?]]ig" seemed quite interested. Miss Hodgkins was here to dinner and talked of her own and Delia Lyman's European experiences. Spent most of the evening singing hymns with May Ellis and Cora Harlow.
