A bright cold day. Letter from Annie this morning. Spent the morning + first half of the afternoon in studying the Bible. Then two hours at the College in Qual. Anal. work, a little more Bible in the evening. Then went to hear George  Makepeace Towle on Victor Hugo, it was a very fine lecture. Silent time was inaugurated at [Matan?] Cottage tonight. Jennette Carpenter does not like it as I foresaw. The others seem to take kindly to it. I have begun to study Babylon in Rawlinson's Ancient Monarchies. Kitty Darling told us in No. 144 about Joseph's Lecture and Prelude today, the prelude on Religion in our colleges.
Tuesday.13.
Chemistry and Bible class. Went to Reform Club meeting in the evening. Harry Smith was my interesting companion during most of the walk. Prof. Hasford was a the lunch table + repeated in a magical manner an unpublished poem of Longfellow's beginning "There came to the Cape, A lady in Crape". I copied from the Literary World a list of American Men of Letters and presented it to the dinner table. No letters today. Wrote to Annie.
Wednesday.14.
Postal from Annie and letter from Jack. Three classes today, studied Bible lesson some and did not do much else. stayed in bed till nearly nine o'clock and then rode up to the college. Went to lunch early with Lottie. Miss Shafer is slowly improving, has a nurse from Boston.
Thursday.15.
Letter from Col Lyon McDonell this morning. Gospel in All Lands came this evening. Wrote to Edith, inviting her to the reception. Have not worked very hard today, since I did not feel very well. Dr. Alexander Mackenzie spoke instead of prayer meeting, upon "whatsoever He saith unto you, do it."
Friday. 16
Chemistry and Bible. Geology Lecture in evening, after meeting of South Natick committee to talk over plans for an entertainment. Miss Kendall came down with me after the Lecture and stayed all night. We read the Tribune, talked and then went to bed.
