User-Contributed Transcription and came away leaving the rest of the family there. 36 little girls with wreaths and roses represented each with a banner the different states and territories and sung remembrance songs; Mr Hopkins persuaded his little daughter, who was one of them to have Maine for her state, a gentleman, a stranger seeing it or her banner requested her to come forward and gave her a gold dollar as he said from respect to his native state. These little girls performed in baluttrenias too on the green in the hollow square round which the tables were set, to the great admiration of the assembled crowd. The Sons of Temperance took a prominent part in the exercises of the day.My health is very good, more perfect I think than is usual for me at this season; the spring has been extremely backward from the influence of the lake winds but vegetation looks charming by now; This is truly a lovely spot, the streets have been all graded this spring they seem better shaded with large trees than Bangor while the character of the land so perfectly smooth and level without stones or pebbles, gives it a cultivated appearance like an old settle place. Every thing about the house is pleasant, perfect neatness reigns in and around it, the street is quiet airy, free from dust, commands a fine view of the lake with vessels constantly passing is the most elevated part of the city. In the large and well laid out gardens enclosing the house, two venerable oaks wave their thick dark foliage, a dozen peach trees about as high as a man's head flourish, while black, red and white raspberries, blackberries, currants, strawberries grapes, are growing at a rapid pace under the July sun, besides are quantities of tomatoes, growing enormous pie plants and plenty of lettuce and radishes for the table. The Seminary is enclosed in 1/4 acre planted with garden vegetable, strawberries and currants while a row of flower beds border the fence all round which the scholars own and take care of.
