User-Contributed Transcription Racine March 19th 1850Dear BrotherYour last is before me, and I am quite surprised to see that the date is so long ago, as last Dec.Can it be that three months have passed away so quickly-- I deferred answering yours, because I happened just then to owe letters to all the folks, which I wrote one after another, as I could find time, without taking evenings much, because light is scarce then at this place.Three weeks ago I received a better from Mother and Lucy with your signature affixed thereto. I was very glad to hear the news it contained. Lucy was good to write me before receiving mine, which however was then on its way, also one to Mother and Joseph, one to Samuel, and a week later one to Eliab enclosing a draft for 50 dolls for him to put out to useing for me. You all thought me negligent in writing but the truth is a long letter to Mother & Joseph sent late last fall, never reached them.. I waited for an answer to it longer than I ought perhaps, wondering at Joseph's silence. My last to Mother reached Milo two or three weeks before she returned; yesterday I received her answer, and a good longer one from Joseph at the beginning he said it would be short, because it tired him to write long. poor fellow; his letter was like himself kind, straight forward full of good sound sense; He advises me not to go home at present, says 'his estimate of the world is confessedly
